Landscaping in Camberwell

Camberwell gardens are rarely blank slates. Most of the time the bones are good, the trees are beautiful, and the rest has slowly got away from someone. Tired lawn, beds that stopped working years ago, paths that have heaved. The job is a renovation, not a rebuild.

I'm Michael, and I run Regal Landscaping from Clayton South, about 20 minutes away. We have already done this exact work here: a Camberwell family's backyard, around $8,000 of work, finished in a single day because we arrived with the full crew and got on with it. We laid fresh buffalo turf and installed lawn sprinklers, so the new lawn waters itself. Quotes are free and there is no call-out fee to come and take a look.

Services we do in Camberwell

  • Garden renovations. Our bread and butter in this suburb. Keep what works, strip what doesn't, bring the rest back to life.
  • Lawn rebuilds and instant turf. Old couch and weeds out, soil fixed, Sir Walter Buffalo down. It handles more shade than most lawns, which matters under established trees.
  • Garden bed renewal and planting. Reworked beds, screening, hedging and shade-tolerant planting that suits older gardens.
  • Paving and paths. Repairs to heaved paths, or new paving that sits comfortably alongside period homes.
  • Irrigation. Hunter gear, installed with our registered plumber Daniel on the team. Established gardens drink a lot in summer; drip lines and pop-ups take that chore away.
  • Tidy-ups and clear-outs. Sometimes the first job is just getting twenty years of growth out.

Why Camberwell gardens need this

Camberwell is hilly. Around Prospect Hill, the oldest and highest part of the suburb, the streets run up and down and some of the east-west ones look right across to the city. On blocks like that the renovation almost always involves levels: a low retaining wall to hold a terrace, stepped paving so a path is not a slip risk, and drainage falls set so the water from the higher ground goes where you want it. Get the levels and the drainage right first and everything you put on top lasts.

Then there is the housing. A lot of Camberwell went up between the wars, and the suburb keeps one of Melbourne's better-preserved runs of California bungalows, Old English and interwar homes, sitting alongside the older Victorian and Edwardian streets around Prospect Hill and the old Tara Estate. These are established gardens with real structure, so the right move is usually to renovate around the bones rather than start over. A California bungalow garden wants planting that suits it, not a blank new-estate look.

Many of those streets are leafy because the old Camberwell council planted the street trees back in the 1920s and 30s, and that canopy is part of why the suburb feels settled. On private land Boroondara protects trees too: anything on its Significant Tree Register needs a council permit before it is removed or hard pruned. We design around the established trees, and if one is in question we tell you to check with council first.

That all sits on the inner east's clay ground, which moves with the seasons, so we lay turf on prepared topsoil rather than straight onto the dirt, build walls and paving with drainage and a bit of movement allowance, and keep heavily watered beds and irrigation off the foundation line.

What's included

A Camberwell garden renovation can include:

  • Clear-out of overgrown or dead planting, and green waste removal
  • Soil improvement and levelling before anything new goes in
  • New lawn, usually Sir Walter Buffalo, on properly prepared soil
  • Garden bed reshaping, planting and mulch
  • Hunter irrigation so the new garden actually survives its first summer

Our process

  1. Call or send photos. Ring 0489 952 492 or use the quote form. A few photos of the problem areas is plenty.
  2. Site visit. We walk the garden together. In Camberwell that usually means looking at shade lines, tree roots, side-gate access and what is worth keeping. No call-out fee.
  3. Written quote. Labour, materials and waste priced as separate lines, so you know exactly what the renovation itself costs.
  4. The build. We arrive with the crew the job needs. Plenty of jobs are done in a day or two.
  5. Handover and follow-up. We walk you through care and watering, then check in on how everything is settling.

What a renovation budget does in Camberwell

Here the budget goes further than in a newer suburb, because you are usually improving a garden that already has structure.

The first dollars go into the unglamorous part: clearing, soil and drainage. Then the visible wins, lawn, beds, paths. Irrigation is the quiet hero; a renovated garden under mature trees competes with them for water all summer.

That Camberwell backyard we finished in one day is the model. Scope agreed up front, full crew on site, done by the time the family got home. You pay for outcomes, not for a ute parked out the front all week.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a landscaping job in Camberwell take?

Shorter than most people expect. We price jobs in crew-days and bring the whole team, so a backyard renovation that might drag on for weeks with a one-man operation is often done in a day or two. Our completed Camberwell project was finished in a single day with the full crew.

Have you actually worked in Camberwell before?

Yes. We completed a full backyard project for a Camberwell family, quoted in stages and finished in one day. We also work in neighbouring Kew and Glen Iris, and HQ is about 20 minutes away in Clayton South.

Can you renovate part of the garden instead of redoing everything?

Absolutely, and in Camberwell that is usually the right call. Good established gardens deserve editing, not erasing. We will tell you at the site visit what is worth keeping, what needs work and what should go.

What about the big trees on my block?

Boroondara protects canopy trees on private land, so removing a larger tree generally needs a council permit, even if it is dead. We do not remove protected trees, and we design lawns, beds and paving to live with established trees rather than fight them. If a tree is the question, check with council first.

Will a new lawn actually grow under mature trees?

Often, yes, with the right turf and honest expectations. Sir Walter Buffalo tolerates more shade than most lawns, which is why it is our default here. If a spot is too dark for any real lawn, I will tell you straight and suggest alternatives rather than sell you turf that will fail.

My block is on a slope near Prospect Hill. Can you handle the levels?

Yes, that is a big part of the work here. The higher streets around Prospect Hill run up and down, so a renovation often means a low retaining wall, stepped paving or new drainage falls to manage where the water goes. We build walls and paving with proper drainage behind them, and for anything structural I will recommend site-specific engineering advice where it is needed.

What planting suits a California bungalow or period garden?

The kind that looks like it belongs. Camberwell has a lot of California bungalows, Old English and Edwardian homes, and the gardens read best when the planting and the hard materials suit the era rather than fighting it. At the site visit we work out what is worth keeping, then plan beds, screening and shade-tolerant planting that sits comfortably with the house.

What does a quote involve?

A free site visit first, because shade, access and what we are keeping all change the price. You then get a written quote with labour, materials and waste itemised separately. No call-out fee, no obligation, and no surprises once we start.
